    This dataset contains wave data collected by surface moorings across three sites (D1, D2 and D3) west of the Isle of Islay between February 2012 and August 2012. There was a Datawell Mk.III directional Waverider buoy moored at each of the three sites collecting the wave data every 30 minutes. The data were collected as part of the metocean survey of the proposed Islay Offshore Windfarm. Partrac Ltd were contracted to conduct the data collection by SSE Renewables and provided the data to The Crown Estate as the landowner of the UK seabed out to 12 nautical miles. The data and associated metadata reports are held at the British Oceanographic Data Centre, as a MEDIN Data Archiving Centre.

    This dataset consists of significant wave height, peak wave period, second moment wave period and nautical wave direction. The dataset is a gridded dataset, with grid resolution of 1.85 km. It covers the entire Irish Sea area, with a precise range from -2.7 degrees longitude to -7 degrees longitude and from 51 degrees latitude to 56 degrees latitude. The data are hourly averages and cover the period from 01 January 1996 to 01 January 2007. The dataset was generated by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System coupled with the Wave Modelling model (POLCOMS-WAM) as part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) CoFEE project which ran from April 2007 to September 2010. The wave parameters generated by POLCOMS-WAM were used as input conditions into a coastal processes and sediment transport model which looked at the response of the north Liverpool coastline to extreme flooding events. The dataset was generated by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (since April 2010, part of the UK National Oceanography Centre). The dataset consists of 132 data files in Climate and Forecast (CF) compliant NetCDF format.

    This dataset consists of estimations of wave parameters, near surface currents and the underlying bathymetry based on X band radar data. These data were used to explore the use of radar to derive nearshore bathymetry at a complex site, at Thorpeness in Suffolk, UK. A Kelvin Hughes 10kW, 9.41 GHz marine X-band radar system was utilised at the field site between August 2015 and April 2017. These data were collected for the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) grant NE/M021564/1- X-band radar applications for coastal monitoring to support improved management of coastal erosion, led by scientists at Bournemouth University, Faculty of Science and Technology.

    The data set comprises temperature, pressure, position and occasionally wave data from nine drifting buoys that were deployed across the Southern Hemisphere. Data were collected from 1979 to 1981. Each buoy carried surface pressure and sea temperature sensors, and seven of the buoys were equipped with drogues in order to aid the study of large scale, near surface ocean currents, and to complement concurrent oceanographic observations made in the area by the research ship RRS Discovery. Two of the buoys were designed with good wave following characteristics and contained accelerometers and simple processors so as to yield good wave information. The buoys were equipped with UHF telemetry transmitters to relay data to the ARGOS system on board the polar orbiting meteorological satellites Tiros-9 and NOAA-6. The buoys were were deployed by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences Wormley Laboratory UK as part of the First Garp Global Experiment (FGGE) Southern Hemisphere Drifting Buoy Network.

    This dataset consists of (1) Bulk properties of sea surface waves, including significant wave height, period and direction. Some additional wave properties relevant to their impact at the sea bed are also included: friction velocity, bottom orbital velocity, direction and period at the sea bed. (2) Depth-averaged eastward and northward current components and sea surface height above sea level. Additionally, eastward and northward current induced stresses at the sea bed. The modelled two datasets are prepared on the same regular grid. With a resolution of around 1/9th x 1/6th degree, i.e. ~ 12km. The continental shelf model extends from 48 to 63 degrees longitude north and from 12 degrees longitude west to 13 degrees longitude east. The dataset was generated by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS) and the spectral wave model (WAM). The data are available in single monthly files, for a 10 year period from January 1999 to December 2008, the POLCOMS data are 30 minute averages, and the WAM data are hourly. The dataset was generated by the UK National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool. The dataset consists of 240 data files in Climate and Forecast (CF) compliant NetCDF format, 120 from POLCOMS and 120 from WAM. This work is funded by the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) under contract MEPF 09-P114 and NERC National Capability funding.   • This report is a contribution to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA7) conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) and describes the hydrography of the SEA7 area. SEA7 lies across the northern end of the Atlantic Meriodional Overturning Circulation and contains a number of major oceanic currents carrying surface water northward across the whole region and returning cold Artic water around the foot of some of its slopes.

  • This report is a contribution to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA6) conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (now Department of Energy and Climate Change). This report describes the physical oceanography of the Irish Sea from St George's Channel in the south to the North Channel and the Clyde Sea in the north. The report covers the topography and depth of the sea floor, the tides, the impact of storms, stratification and its consequences and the mean circulation, all with a view to mean and extreme conditions. The predominant dynamical process is the semi-diurnal tides, with areas of both high and low energy embraced. Superimposed on this is the full range of water column structure areas that are well mixed throughout the year; areas that stratify thermally in summer; areas of freshwater influence from river discharges, leading both to nearshore density gradients and stratification; frontal regions between the well-mixed and stratified regions. The movement of the water and the amount of mixing prescribe physical effects, such as forces on structures and the movement and dispersion of contaminants, but also significantly influence biogeochemical processes including sediment erosion / deposition and movement, particularly of suspended sediment, benthic exchanges and primary productivity (via stratification, nutrient exchanges and light levels).

    This dataset contains wave spectra, wave statistics and current data collected by surface and subsurface moorings across three sites in the Bristol Channel between March 2010 and April 2011. A Datawell Mk.III directional Waverider buoy was moored at one site collecting wave spectra and statistics data while Nortek Acoustic Wave and Current meters (AWAC) were moored at the seabed in trawl resistant frames at two sites. The AWACs collected wave data from the surface and current data through the water column split into 2 m bins. TRIAXYS directional wave sensors with onboard Nortek Aquadopp current profilers were also deployed at the two sites. Like the AWAC moorings, the TRIAXYS moorings collected wave data from the surface and current data through the water column split into 1 m bins. The data were collected as part of the environmental impact assessment of the proposed Atlantic Array offshore wind farm. GEMS Survey Ltd were contracted to conduct the data collection and provided the data to The Crown Estate as the landowner of the UK seabed out to 12 nautical miles. The data and associated metadata reports are held at the British Oceanographic Data Centre, as a MEDIN Data Archiving Centre.

    This dataset consists of measurements of wave height, direction and frequency, bubble size distribution, Autoflux measurements of air-sea fluxes CO2, and WAVEX measurements of directional wave radar. Data were collected onboard the RRS James Clark Ross in the Weddell Sea during cruises in the 2010/2011, 2011/12 and 2012/13 field seasons. Meteorology data were collected using an aspirated psychrometer and temperature and humidity sensors mounted above the bridge of the ship. Wavex and Autoflux systems were run for the duration of each cruise. Bubble size distributions were measured with two acoustic resonators. These cruises formed the field component of NERC Discovery Science project "Waves, Aerosol and Gas Exchange Study (WAGES)”. The data were collected to measure the amount of aerosol at different sizes generated near the surface and transported upwards into the atmosphere, along with the wind speed, wave size and white-capping under a wide range of different conditions. The aim was to improve understanding of aerosol generation and ultimately the way in which clouds are represented within climate models. The Discovery Science project was composed of three Standard Grants. The lead grant, NE/G00353X/1, was held by the University of Leeds, School of Earth and Environment, with Professor Ian M. Brooks as principal investigator. The funding period for this grant was 01 August 2009 to 31 March 2014. Child grant NE/G003696/1 was held by the National Oceanography Centre, Department of Science and Technology and was led by Professor Meric Srokosz. The funding period for this grant was 01 September 2009 to 31 March 2014. The third grant was held under the title “pCO2 data collection on James Clark Ross in support of Autoflux” at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory. It was led by Professor Phillip D. Nightingale and was funded for the period covering 01 April 2010 to 31 March 2013. All data described have been received by BODC from the RRS James Clark Ross and will be processed and made available online in the future. Raw data are available on request.

    The data set includes depth soundings, water temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrient (phosphate, silicate, nitrite, nitrate) data, meteorological measurements (temperature, pressure), and wind and sea state observations. The data primarily originate from the Southern Ocean, although some data from the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Australia, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean are also included. The data were collected between 1925 and 1951 and are held in the series of nine Discovery Reports published between 1929 and 1957. These reports contain station lists of measurements taken by RRS Discovery and RRS William Scoresby and staff of the Marine Biological Station at South Georgia between 1925 and 1939, plus station lists of observations made by RRS William Scoresby and RRS Discovery between 1950 and 1951. Discovery station numbers 1 to 2911, William Scoresby stations WS1 to WS1107, Marine Biological Station MS1 to MS106, South Sandwich Islands stations 1 to 58 and Ross Sea stations 1 to 29 are included in the data set. The Discovery Project was commissioned by the Royal Society as a series of Antarctic cruises, originally with the aim of investigating the commercial whaling industry. The Discovery Reports are currently held at the British Oceanographic Data Centre in paper format. There is an ongoing effort to digitise the reports and the intention is to store these digitised versions at BODC.
